Frequently asked questions

Ordering

How do I order custom trim and flashing?
It's easy — our online Custom Trim & Flashing product lets you select your stretch-out (the total flat width of the metal before bending), add bends and hems, and upload your profile drawing right at checkout. Include dimensions, bend angles, and hem locations and we'll fabricate it from the same steel as our panels so everything matches. Prefer email, or not sure how to draw a profile? Call us — we'll walk you through it.

How do I figure out how much material to order?
Measure each roof plane's width and eave-to-ridge length. Panel coverage width determines how many panels you need per plane; panels should run eave to ridge in one piece whenever possible. Add trim for ridge, eaves, rakes, valleys, and penetrations. Or send us your roof dimensions or plans and we'll put together a complete takeoff — panels, trim, clips, fasteners, underlayment, and sealant — so nothing gets forgotten.

How fast will I get my order?
Fast — it's in our name. We guarantee up to 200 LF of custom flashing or trim same-day when ordered by 2 pm MST. Larger trim orders typically fabricate in 3 days (up to one week at peak). Most panel orders are ready for shipping or pickup within one week.

Can I change or cancel my order?
Yes — up until production begins. Once your panels or trim have been cut or formed, the order can't be changed or canceled, because the material is made to your exact dimensions. Call us as soon as possible if something needs to change.

Returns

What is your return policy on custom fabricated metal?
Custom-fabricated items — panels cut to length, custom trim and flashing, and anything made to your specifications — are final sale and cannot be returned. Each piece is made to order for your project and can't be restocked or resold. Please double-check all dimensions, quantities, profiles, and colors before confirming your order; we fabricate exactly to the specs you approve.

If we made an error — wrong dimensions versus your approved order, or a material or manufacturing defect — we'll remake the affected pieces or refund them. Inspect your order at pickup or delivery and report any problems within 7 days.

Can I return stock items like fasteners, clips, or underlayment?
Yes — unopened stocked accessories in resalable condition may be returned within 30 days. Sealants and any opened packaging are non-returnable.

What is oil canning, and is it covered?
Oil canning is a visible waviness or rippling in the flat areas of metal panels, most noticeable in certain light and at certain angles. It is an inherent characteristic of all cold-rolled flat metal products — not a defect. It's purely cosmetic and has no effect on the strength, weather-tightness, or lifespan of your roof. Consistent with industry standards, including the Metal Construction Association's position, oil canning is not grounds for rejection of panels or a warranty claim.

What does Same-Day Metal do to minimize oil canning?
We stack the deck against it before the metal ever leaves our shop. Our standing seam panels are roll-formed from heavy 24-gauge Drexel Metals coil, and we handle, stack, and stage panels carefully to avoid inducing stress. If oil canning is a concern for your project, we highly recommend one of our panel profile options — striations, ribs, v-ribs, or pencil ribs — which stiffen the flat of the panel and dramatically reduce visible waviness.

Installation matters just as much: a flat, in-plane substrate, correct clip spacing, fasteners that aren't overdriven, and room for thermal expansion all reduce visible waviness. A foam backer rod under the panel center and lighter, low-gloss colors help too. Happy to talk through options before you order.

Warranty

Will my metal roof rust or fade? What warranty do I get?
Our panels are formed from Drexel Metals coil and carry a 35-year warranty on all painted finishes and a 25-year warranty on bare Galvalume®. Color-match touch-up paint pens are available for minor installation scratches.

Metal Roofing Basics

How long does a metal roof last?
A properly installed 24ga standing seam roof routinely lasts 40–50+ years — two to three times the life of asphalt shingles — with minimal maintenance. The concealed-fastener design means no exposed screws and washers to weather, back out, and leak over time.

Snap lock, mechanical lock, or nail strip — which panel do I need?
All three are concealed-fastener standing seam systems. Snap lock panels snap together over clips — fast to install and great for most residential roofs at 3:12 pitch or steeper. Mechanical lock panels are crimped together with a seaming tool — the strongest, most weather-tight option and the right choice for low slopes and heavy wind or snow; our 2" double-lock panels can go as low as 1/2:12 pitch, and we offer factory hot-melt in-seam sealant for low-slope applications. Nail strip fastens through a pre-punched flange without separate clips — the most economical, best for shorter runs. Not sure? Tell us your roof pitch, panel lengths, and location and we'll recommend a system.

What gauge should I choose?
For standing seam roofing we recommend 24ga — it's stronger, resists dents from hail and foot traffic, handles snow loads better, and holds its shape (less oil canning). It's what most premium standing seam systems are spec'd in. We also offer 26ga and select 29ga products where budget or application calls for a lighter panel — tell us about your project and we'll help you choose.

Do I need underlayment? What about snow guards?
Yes on underlayment — a high-temperature synthetic underlayment is the secondary water barrier and protects against condensation; use self-adhering high-temp ice & water membrane at low slopes, valleys, eaves, and high-heat areas. And if you're in snow country, plan on snow guards: snow releases off metal roofs suddenly and in sheets. We stock S-5!® clamp-on snow retention that grips the seam without penetrating the panel.

Can metal roofing be installed over my existing shingles?
Often yes — over one layer of shingles with the right underlayment or furring, saving tear-off cost and landfill waste. Local code and the condition of the existing deck determine whether it's a good idea, so check with your building department and installer first.

Shipping & Local Pickup

How does shipping work?
All projects are quoted individually so you never overpay on freight. After you place your order, you'll receive a shipping quote within 24 hours for your approval before anything ships. Local pickup at our Denver, CO facility is also available.
